Alcopops - proper tax classification
Sharing is caring
One of our goals with the alcopops idea is to reduce the amount of access youth have to these sweet, deceptive drinks, targeted to young people, by properly classifying them as distilled spirits, as opposed to their current classification as beer. When creating an alcopops, the alcohol industries start with beer, take out all the ingredients except water and add flavoring which gives the drink its alcohol content. With the raise in taxation, over time California can create substantial revenues that could go toward recovery, prevention, and youth programs. As young people, we are tired of the alcohol industry and big business taking advantage of us! Lets raise the prices of Alcopops and help keep them out of the hands of America's youth!
The California Youth Council (CYC) fought to raise the taxation of alcopops in 2008 and was successful until just a few weeks ago, the decision was overturned by the courts. The CYC spent countless hours educating members of the Board of Equalization as well as the California community, working with legislature to properly move this action along, and testifying in front of hundreds of people to have the drinks reclassified.
