As a freshmen starting in high school, I had many questions about college and about internships. Even now as a junior, I still have many questions unanswered. My parents don’t know much about college and I would have participated more in extracurricular activities if I had more information. From experience, counselors were not that engaging. I believe students need more exposure to careers and colleges as soon as freshmen year. I believe there could be a government sponsored club in all schools that offers more insight about colleges and careers. A teacher would watch over the club. The club would be advertised mainly to freshmen. Extra credit could be an incentive for joining and actively participating in the club. There could be a small scholarship opportunity for each club sponsored bythe government. The club would help one discover career and college interests. It would engage students and help them connect with programs and jobs. There could also be upperclassmen serving asmentors. Usually jobs interfere with school so the club could find jobs and internships that are student-friendly. Class credit could be given to those working in a job or internship since they would be discovering their passions. I think students should maintain their grades or be fired. There could be more college field trips offered and extra application help. The clubs could work together with schools to ensure students’ successes, such as determining which classes to keep and cut based on student opinion.
My name is Danny. I am an inner city kid in the 11th grade. I will be the first to attend college in my family. I active in Key Club at my school and am currently vice-president of the club. I recently became involved in the Youth Leadership Institute, where I campaign aginst underage alcohol use by fighting against misconceptions about alcohol and using positive peer pressure to encourage students to not drink.
