Do What's Right for Kids: Urge Senate Appropriations Committee to Support Juvenile Justice Funding
On June 3, the House of Representatives passed the Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Committee's FY'16 budget proposal, H.R. 2578. That measure included ZERO FUNDING for key programs that are financed through Title II and Title V of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act (JJDPA). This week Members of the Senate Appropriations Committee's Commerce Justice and Science Subcommittee will consider funding levelsfor key juvenile justice funding! The full Senate Appropriations Committee is expected to take up the issue later this week.
The Senate Dems have made it clear that they will block the floor vote until the budget caps are raised, so being heard now is REALLY important so your input is essential to ensuring that these funds are maintained!
Email or call your Senator today to let them know that juvenile justice funding is vital to protecting our children, our families, and our communities!
Titles II and V of the JJDPA are the ONLY federal funding source to support:
- Prevention programs for at-risk youth;
- Law enforcement and judicial training;
- Evidence-based interventions for young people;
- Keeping kids out of adult jails and lockups; and
- Making sure our children are not incarcerated for behaviors such as skipping school.
Tell your representative that juvenile justice matters. Help us spread this urgency far and wide by taking a minute to tweet officials to protect important juvenile justice funding. Don't worry, we've already included the twitter handles for members on the CJS subcommittee!
