Getting Paid to Train
Sharing is caring
My idea is called Getting Paid to Train. This program would allow high school and college students to undergo job training with companies after school while attending school during the day as a way to gain experience and earn money as a bonus. In addition, Getting Paid to Train lets its participants turn this experience into college credits for the field they are getting trained in. For example, if a student gets paid to train to be an accountant then that student gets credit for an accounting course at the college of their choice. As a result, the participant in the program gains experience, money and college credit. Furthermore, because they are getting college credit for the course they are that much closer to finishing college which makes for a decrease in their college expenses.
I'm part of a Youth Leadership Institute group called YO! Mateo and we did a Smoke-Free Hollywood campaign this year. During our campaign we conducted surveys to find out how much smoking was exposed in children's movies. Our goal was to get tobacco product placement out of movies, strong anti-smoking public service announcements to be shown before a movie with smoking in it, movie producers to certify that they didn't receive money incentives from tobacco companies to get their products placed in their movies and to make G, PG and PG-13 tabacco-free. These four policies together would result in a decrease in the number of youth that begin to smoke because of how they are targetted by tobacco companies. This project ties into what I already do because they both open opportunities for youth not only in the community but also in their futures.
