Society want teens to grow up to become productive citizens and life-long learners. When that same society does not prepare you for the reality of life, it can become physically, emotionally, and socially daunting. Society has centered us around this value system for teens to live up to but it does not lay down the groundwork for us and how to go about in maneuvering in this value system.
First, lets look at education. A lot of the time, we get teachers who are overwhelmed and fed up with the system. When they are not able to teach us purely what we need without the system getting involved, the best interest of the student is not in mind. We want the best education available and not the dumbed down version. Teachers are preparing the future and they should simply be compensated for it.
Second, getting that first job experience is a great accomplishment in a teen's life. Now, when we have to sit back and watch jobs going to adults that would normally be taken by teens, it gives you an eerie look on life. Nowadays, people do not want to hire teens with no experience. How are we expected to get that experience if no one is willing to take that leap of faith and hire us? Yes, there maybe some teens who do not portray good work ethics, but we need highly trained mentors. Can you just give us that opportunity to see how far we can take it?
Finally, I think we should get society to create a program where we can learn and get paid at the same time. Different companies should sponsor a number of teens, assign them a small job in accordance to their interest, and give them that chance. Work with the teen like its a real job and pay them like one too. This would keep a lot of teens busy and out of trouble during the summer.
Its just like what my mother tells me all the time, "An idle mind is a terrible thing." Lets not let a good mind go to waste by not giving them the support and background knowledge necessary to make it in the real world.
I'm Mary. A music-loving, tech-addicted 17 year old. A junior until 5/17/12, then I'm a SENIOR. WHOOO!!! I'm a violist, violinist, reader, writer, committed volunteer, and music feign. I just want to make a change in my community, in my state, in my nation, and if we get there the whole world.
