The Pregnant and Parenting Students Access to Education Act reponds to the high school dropout crisis in our nation. If we do not support these young parents and they do not complete their high school graduation and hopefully enroll in college, they will end up living in poverty, with little chance of ever getting a decent job. That affects everyone in their community. Research shows that their children will also be more likely to drop out of school and live in poverty.
This is a necessary bill. Too many young parents "age out" of the eligibilty for a high school diploma before they become mature enough to realize what a mistake they made in dropping out. It is not fair to them. They generally lack the kind of home that would give the kind of support needed to prevent pregnancy in the first place and to be able to remain in school in the second place.
I have been working with pregnant and parenting teens for nine years and have seen them struggle to get an education. It often seems as if the schools are working against them in their efforts. On several occasions school prinicpals and counselors have told pregnant students not to continue going to school during the later months of their pregnancies, although there is no medical indication for them
