The Campaign for a Presidential Youth Council: Celebrating 1 Year!

April 29, 2013

In April 2012, the Campaign for a Presidential Youth Council launched an unprecedented effort to bring more youth voices to Washington. Over the last year, we have been privileged to receive an outpouring of support from thousands of young people and hundreds of influential adults. We wanted to take a moment this Global Youth Service Day and reflect with you, our most important allies, on the progress we have made.

The Big 100

From the start of the Campaign for a Presidential Youth Council, we have been lucky to have the support of more than 100 national organizations that are leaders in the youth development field.

Recommended to the White House

In its final report to the President, The White House Council for Community Solutions recommended the creation of a youth advisory council for the executive branch.

Our Board of Advisors is made up of some of America's smartest, most respected civic leaders, from head of business to former presidential advisors. We are honored to have their support and guidance.

Most of the progress we've made in the past twelve months can be directly attributed to the amazing volunteer work of young people around the country. Thanks to financial support from The Knight Foundation, we've been able to take the campaign to a whole new level. Click here to help us thank them.

In 2012, Senate Resolution 608 and House Resolution 115 were introduced in Congress to support the establishment of a Presidential Youth Council. The bipartisan support from legislators like Senator Tom Udall (D-NM), Former Senator Scott Brown (R-MA) and Congressman John Larson (D-CT) and Congressman John Shimkus (R-IL) demonstrated the importance of youth voice in government.

Campus Ambassadors
Even before the Campaign officially launched, young people nationwide wanted to volunteer, because they believed so strongly in the need for a Presidential Youth Council. Inspired by their dedication, we created the Community and Campus Ambassadors program to utilize the talents of this amazing group of volunteers to engage and sustain the campaign locally and nationally. We now have Ambassadors in 40 states.

Looking Ahead: The Momentum Continues

It has been a powerful first year, but we are not stopping here. Over the next two months, with funding from the Knight Foundation and support from SparkAction, we will launch five new components of the Campaign. We will show that just one year into the campaign, support for a Presidential Youth Council is stronger than ever.

We can never say it enough -- thank you for your amazing support. None of this would have been possible with you.
