Charting learning environments in Chicago

In 1994, the Chicago Public Schools surveyed 39,000 of its 6th, 8th, and 10th grade students about the extent to which their schools offered “student-centered learning climates.” The survey focused on feelings of safety, teaching caring, personalization, expectations, peer support, and classroom behavior. The survey was a major opportunity to take stock of district-wide reform efforts, and allowed data analysis on school-by-school and district-wide levels.
