This report summarizes the impact of participating in the LA’s Best program, including summaries of five earlier evaluations that emphasize both outcomes and processes. LA’s Best serves disadvantaged K-5 students by providing homework assistance, performing arts, field trips, and a range of other enrichment activities in safe environments after school. This longitudinal study looked at differences in academic performance between program students and a comparison group, and the factors that influence those outcomes. The study found increased school attendance and increased standardized test scores among students with high levels of participation. It appears that higher levels of participation led to better school attendance, which in turn led to improved academic achievement.
