A Documentation Report on the New York City Beacons Initiative

M. Cahill
January 1, 1993

The Beacons are comprehensive school-based centers that offer sports and recreation, arts and culture, educational opportunities, vocational training, health education, and opportunities for community meetings and neighborhood activities. This report describes how this complex school/community collaboration evolved, by documenting the history, goals and strategies, implementation status, and implementation challenges associated with the Beacons. While it does not report on progress toward specific program outcomes, the report does discuss the impacts of the Beacons on youth, neighborhoods and schools based on program observation, interviews with directors, principals, and staff, and focus groups with youth.
