Expanding College Access, Strengthening Schools

January 1, 2002

The College Bound Program grew out of the GE Fund's central committment to increasing educational opportunity and quality, along with the Fund's experience with pre-college education, particularly in urban settings. Based on its experience with other efforts, the Fund believed that a targeted, yet comprehensive approach could lead to long-term change for schools and students. Key elements of that approach were the use of clear, simple measurable goals around which an array of locally-designed activities could be focused; significant funding; and GE employee involvement as tutors, mentors and in other capacities. These components formed the basis of the College Bound design.
