How Congress Used Social Media in 2017, A Year in Review: Trends, Habits, and Engagement

Members of Congress have increasingly turned to social media to communicate their positions and views on policies, legislation and events. This year, the 535 members of Congress have collectively posted over 1 million times on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Medium and YouTube. Quorum’s recent 2017 Congressional Social Media Report explored the trends, habits and engagement of members of Congress on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Findings include:

  • Overall, hashtags related to healthcare held four of the top five spots in the rankings of top hashtags this year.
  • #trumpcare, #aca, and #taxreform were the most used hashtags by members of Congress.
  • On average, Republicans were more active on Instagram while Democrats were more active on Twitter and Facebook.
