Hunger in Our Schools: A Teacher Report

September 17, 2012

From Share our Strength, a mini summary:

"According to new USDA food security data out this month, over 1 in 5 children in the United States is at risk of hunger. Map the Meal Gap research from Feeding America shows that child hunger can vary significantly from one congressional district to the next.
A  report by Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign, Hunger in our Schools, three out of five teachers see kids coming to school hungry on a regular basis, and are seeing the impact in the classroom. Hunger has an impact on both children’s health and their ability to learn, having lasting consequences for the well-being of both individual children and the communities in which they live.
How prevalent is child hunger nationally and in your district and what programs exist to address it? How does hunger show up in the classroom? What is the impact of hunger and poor nutrition on health and cognition? "
