Sharing is caring
https://www.facebook.com/NolaEyeCare After Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans faced one of the biggest healthcare crises of all time. With the closure of Charity Hospital, many families that relied on the hospital for its services for the uninsured were left without prescriptions and proper medical care. Medical treatment heavily depended on volatile living and financial circumstances. Even seven years later, Charity Hospital's absence can be felt. The barriers of overcoming the limited access to care, increasing the number physicians available in areas of need, and retaining Medicaid coverage for families with children still persist.Taking into consideration these three barriers, many families are not able to provide proper healthcare for their children. Health issues undoubtedly impair students' ability to learn, and vision stands as one of the most integral components conducive to successful child development. Frequent eye examinations from an early age catches visual problems during the beginning stages when responsiveness to treatment is at its highest. This early detection allows students to receive proper treatment whether it is simply glasses for near or farsightedness to more serious therapy for diseases like glaucoma. Untreated visual issues in children as young as elementary school students translates into difficulty in learning as evidenced by dismal scores in statewide testing that lead to cuts in funding for educational initiatives- a problem that continues to plague the Orleans Parish School System. NOLA Eye Care seeks to provide free, comprehensive eye care by certified Lion's doctors twice an academic year to all public school elementary school students. Furthermore, NOLA Eye Care provides assistance to students diagnosed with serious ocular disabilities by offering and arranging a discounted consultation with a nearby hospital.
