Report Roundup: Protect Children Instead of Guns 2000

November 1, 2000

This report releases the latest firearm death data (1998), which presents “some good news” — the number of child gun deaths has dropped to 3,761, below 4,000 for the first time since 1988 — but the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) observes that is nothing to celebrate. Despite the decline in deaths, the number is still high, and the other statistics presented in this report are grim.

Among them: In 1998 the number of children under 10 killed by gunfire was nearly three times the number of police officers killed in the line of duty; 2,184 children were murdered by gunfire; and the percentage of suicide deaths from firearms increased. CDF uses these numbers to urge voters to demand registration of guns at all points of sale, licencing of gun owners, safe storage laws and mandatory trigger locks, and a one-a-month limitation on handgun purchases. 6 pages.
