Supporting Transitions

December 23, 2002

Rising seniors at West Morris Central High School in Chester, NJ lead small groups of rising ninth graders in monthly transition support sessions that begin December and continue through the following school year. As the new school year begins, the seniors (last year’s juniors) plan a half-day orientation for the ninth graders (last year’s eighth graders) that encompasses introductions to the school personnel (teachers, administrators, counselors), information about the school policies, facilities and schedules, and topics of interest such as peer pressure. The younger students receive ongoing support, including an interest and abilities career inventory that the seniors administer, and the older students have leadership roles for creating positive relationships.
