Supporting Transitions

December 23, 2002

The Ninth Grade Academy is part of the Talent Development High School with Career Academies model that began in 1994 as a partnership between the Johns Hopkins University Center on the Education of Students Placed At Risk (CRESPAR) and Patterson High School in Baltimore and has expanded to schools across the country. The Academy is structured to offer academic and social supports for students during the transition to high school. These supports are structured with a physical setting that is a school-within-a-school, an interdisciplinary team of teachers for a cohort of 150-200 students, schedules with block times for student-centered learning and projects, supplemental math and English courses, and career and post-secondary education awareness.
