Three Girls on a Mission to Change the Presidential Debates

October 19, 2012

When Elena, Sammi, and Emma-- high school students from New Jersey -- found out that there hadn't been a female moderator in any Presidential debates in over twenty years, they were outraged.  "We already know that no women will be on stage at this year's presidential debates," they said, "but what about in the moderator's chair?"

So, together they started two petitions on one to the Commission on Presidential Debates and one to the campaigns of Barack Obama an Mitt Romney-- asking that a female moderator be chosen for at least one of the three Presidential debates in 2012.

With well over 180,000 signatures along with public support from notable female policymakers including U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney, and former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, they succeeded.  On August 13, the Commission on Presidential Debates announced that CNN's Candy Crowley will moderate the second presidential debate on October 16.
