New projections released last week by the Census Bureau reflect historic shifts in the nation’s demographics, with minorities expected to become the majority nationally by 2043. William Frey explains that the rapid growth in “new minority” groups through immigration and higher birth rates—particularly among Hispanics and Asians—will also bring dramatic changes to the nation’s political and economic landscape. According to Frey, America’s future economic competitiveness will hinge on preparing these populations to join a knowledge-based, globalized labor force.
