Youth Participation

December 24, 1975

This concept paper contains the theoretical framework and knowledge base of “youth participation.” In addition to an elaborate definition of the concept, this report notes how youth participation programs are distinct from other programs that offer benefits to youth. It is up front about both challenges to implementing youth action initiatives and the impediments in place due to societal perceptions of young people. The aim of this report is to encourage national support for young people having increasing opportunities for responsibly contributing to their communities and to society as a whole. Examples of 15 youth participation projects are included in the appendix. This is a key resource for policy makers, researchers and practitioners.
